Doing
these portraits has been a delight, starting with the
willingness of the subjects.
I’ve
worked from photographs. I take two or three quick photos
(before the subject gets too self-conscious or posed). I make a
very light drawing from the photo. Then, working quite slowly,
I usually start with blue/green/purple shadows, layering shades
of red, brown, yellow over the shadows. It takes a while; I let
the paper dry between layers of color. It’s not the usual very
free way of using watercolor, but watching the face evolve
slowly on paper, enjoying the intricacies of wrinkles, eyebrows,
teeth, and thinking of each person while painting has been a
great pleasure.
My usual subject is nature: land and seascape, the forms of trees, shells, clouds, the movement of water. But creating this show of neighbors’ faces has been huge fun. |
